The installer walked off and left an eight-foot aluminum sphere in halves. Power had to come 35 feet down the hoist.
About the project
The original installer walked off the job and left the frame in two halves. Nobody sells an 8-foot aluminum orb built to hold a 3D pixel array, so finishing it was the only option. One dome was covered in taped-over pixel modules and black spray paint. I stripped the mess and started over.
Keeping the power supplies in the ceiling left empty space inside the frame for the visual effect, but it meant pushing DC power across a 35-foot run. To beat the voltage drop, I installed supplies with remote sense to adjust output voltage in real time.
The whole rig hung from a hoist. Moving heavy copper without snagging required a PVC pipe flange mounted through the center. I spiral-wrapped welding cables and fed them down through the pipe. That guide kept the cables clean and stopped the sphere from spinning as it dropped to the dance floor every night.
