Unfold

Small talk on a video call is the worst version of small talk. Nobody can read the room, everyone talks over each other, and the weather comes up twice. Unfold is a deck of conversation prompts for getting past that part faster.

It started as a quick prototype for combining decks and drawing cards. There are four decks and three ways to play them. To make it useful across more than one session, the game had to remember which cards a group had already seen and let people build their own decks, so I added a save-state layer that lives entirely in the browser. Nobody has to sign up for anything. That also meant there was nothing to host, so it sits on GitHub Pages as a static site.

I have played it with my partner sitting next to me on the couch. I have not yet played it on an actual video call with friends or family, which is the whole point. That is on the list.
