First thing I'd sculpted since grade school. Kept simple enough for the scanner to see it and a 16x16 grid to divide it.
About the project
The last time I had sculpted anything by hand was a grade-school art class. I shaped this mask out of white modeling clay, keeping it rough and simple on purpose: simple enough for a hand scanner to read, and simple enough that a 16 x 16 grid could divide it without fighting the surface.
The scan refused to cooperate anyway. The RevoPop kept leaving holes in the mesh that I struggled to close, and the sculpt did not have enough vertical height at the base to fit the hardware. I ended up running a low-poly pass over the whole scan just to force it into a closed shape. Once I had a solid model, I pulled it into Blender and built the internal subdivision to isolate 256 pixels behind it.
The result is a rough, hand-made exterior sitting on a perfectly rigid grid of black walls and white diffusion. The two do not look like they belong together until the lights come on.
