I still can't tell you what it is. A tree is the closest word. I sculpted it knowing 256 LEDs were going inside.
About the project
I still could not tell you exactly what this shape is. A tree is the closest thing I can think of. I sculpted it in white modeling clay knowing from the start that it would be scanned and filled with LEDs, so the only real requirement was enough depth to hide an internal grid inside it.
Once the RevoPop scan came out clean, I brought the mesh into Blender and ran it through the same internal subdivision process as the other organic pieces. It printed in dual-color PLA, black for the mask and white for the diffusion, over a 256-pixel matrix. Getting light to punch through an irregular shape meant keeping the outer shell exactly one millimeter thick everywhere. Thicker and the branches went dark. The grid underneath is rigid and square. The thing on top of it is whatever you decide it is.
