Face

Shelved for a year. My printers could not hold a surface smooth enough for a face to read, so I waited for one that could.

About the project

A human face on a 16 x 16 grid was one of the first ideas I had when I started making these prints. It sat on the shelf for about a year. My old printers could not do it. The surface came out too rough to read as a face, I could not hold the white layer at a consistent thickness, and the machines flatly refused to print the white-lined walls I needed for internal bounce.

I shelved it until I got a Bambu Lab X1C. That machine solved the surface finish. I printed the mask and borders in black and the diffusion in white, and then spent the real effort on the one variable that mattered: the exact thickness of that white layer. A face is the least forgiving subject for a low-resolution matrix. Too thick and the expression washes out. Too thin and you see the grid instead of the face. Dialed in, it reads.
